Spurs fans were frustrated to hear that one of Jose Mourinho’s top targets Ruben Dias has signed a new deal with Benfica, which leaves him with an extremely expensive release clause.

This comes shortly after another of Mourinho’s targets in Bruno Fernandes also signed a new contract with Sporting Lisbon last week, so will no doubt come as some frustration for the new Spurs manager. According to 90min football (via TranSPURS), the 22-year-old’s new contract includes a release clause of €100 million (£86 million) which therefore seems to rule out any chance of Spurs signing the centre-back.

Mourinho had confirmed that both Dias and Fernandes featured on his transfer wishlist but will have to spend big if he wants to bring the Portuguese duo to North London in the upcoming transfer window. The young defender has been in superb form for Benfica this season; averaging a 7.25 rating in the Liga NOS.

Spurs fans are clearly frustrated that Dias has signed a new deal and feel as if the chances of a deal happening are now slim.

What do we think?

Dias looks a very talented defender and at just 22-years-old looks like he could be a great prospect in the future. However, with his release clause now a massive £86 million, you wouldn’t expect Spurs to make a move for him in January, despite their struggling defence.
