Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino could be set for a shock return to the Premier League, with Manchester City reportedly eyeing up the Argentinian as a replacement for Pep Guardiola.

According to the Daily Mail, the 47-year-old boss is considered to be the ideal replacement for Guardiola should he be sacked by the Premier League champions. City find themselves 14 points adrift of current leaders Liverpool and a third successive Premier League title looks to be out of reach for the former Barcelona man.

Interestingly, it’s stated that ‘there remains the feeling Pochettino might come as a pair, with Harry Kane.’, which surely wouldn’t go down well with Spurs fans as the Englishman has been the star man for the North London club this season, producing 36% of the club’s goals in the Premier League and 15 in all competitions.

The report suggests that Guardiola could leave City in the summer if he fails to win the Champions League, in which case the Citizens would surely consider someone of Pochettino’s quality as his replacement.

Pochettino was sacked by Spurs in November after a dreadful start to the season which left them in 14th position, but his work in turning the North London club into Champions League regulars should not be underestimated and is clearly gaining him some suitors from across Europe.

TIF Tactics:

City have struggled to replace Vincent Kompany in their defence and have struggled this season as a result. Although it would be strange to see Guardiola leave City after creating one of the best Premier League teams seen in recent times, it does seem as if he is struggling so far this campaign.

Guardiola’s dream is to win the Champions League with City and if they fail to do so again this year then it would not be a surprise to see him depart in the summer, perhaps on his own terms. If that does come to fruition and Pochettino is still available, it would be strange for them to not at least consider the former Spurs man.

Of course, it makes sense for City to potentially take Kane on at the Etihad with Sergio Aguero getting on with age, but it seems highly unlikely that Daniel Levy would even dream of letting the Englishman leave.
