Spurs fans have been contemplating the idea of natural centre-back Juan Foyth playing in a defensive-midfield position after a post from Alasdair Gold caught the attention of fans.
Gold’s article for Football.London discusses the idea of the 21-year-old adopting a new position under Jose Mourinho, with the Argentinian struggling for game time in defence so far this season. Foyth made a rare start at centre-back in Wednesday night’s 3-1 defeat by Bayern Munich and generally impressed, but it is likely that Mourinho will revert back to a partnership of Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld for Sunday’s game at Wolves.
The young centre-back is yet to enjoy a sustained spell in the side since joining from Esudiantes in 2017, with just 30 appearances for the North London club to his name. However, Foyth is still a regular for the Argentinian national side and would no doubt be an attractive proposition for clubs in the January transfer window if his playing time does not improve.
Would Foyth make a good defensive midfielder?
Yes
No
Reaction from Spurs fans to Gold’s post on Foyth can be seen in the tweets below.
For me he is the answer. Unfortunately Dier is nowhere near good enough and u cant get away with not playing a defensive minded player in that position
Time for a new player. Time for Foyth— SpursSignYoucefAtal (@SpursTransfer10) December 12, 2019
Can you ask Jose? Feels like it would be a perfect fit for him

Completely agree with this. And have been wondering the same for ages.

He reminds me of Kimmich. Talented enough to play all three positions.

Alasdair- I’ve been saying this for 2 seasons now. He is a hyper aggressive ball carrying cb. He absolutely needs to at least be considered there. Finally their is a written piece on it.

He would be great there. Defensively good, passing isn’t bad and can progress with the ball well. Technically he’s better than the average CB, and Dier and Wanyama are nowhere near up to the task of protecting our defence so why not.

He is so much better than Dier although when N’Dombele is fully fit Foyth wouldn’t get a look in there. Skipp is rated highly as well and with Wanyama still there it’s overloaded in that position.

These Spurs fans are clearly in agreement that Foyth would make an excellent defensive-midfielder and will be hoping to see Mourinho try him out in that position in the near future.
What do we think?
Foyth looks to have the technical ability to play in a more advanced position, but he may well be needed at centre-back, especially if both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld depart at the end of the season when their contracts expire. He is still only 21 so may yet develop into a world-class centre-back but either way you would hope to see more of him in the Spurs team in the upcoming months.
