Spurs fans were less than complimentary when hearing it is Serge Aurier’s birthday on Tuesday, with many fans suggesting that the Ivorian is far from good enough.

The club posted birthday wishes to Aurier on their official Twitter this week, with a video of his excellent strike against Olympiakos in the 4-2 win in the Champions League last month. However, the majority of comments seemed to be from fans suggesting that the 27-year-old should be sold in the January transfer window.

Since joining the club from PSG in 2017, the right-back has gone on to make 57 appearances for Spurs, with the Ivory Coast international often benched by Kieran Trippier, who was the club’s first-choice right-back before his move to Atletico Madrid in the summer. This season Aurier has claimed the right-back spot as his own and has looked very impressive in some fixtures, but disastrous performances against the likes of Bayern Munich and Southampton have seemingly marred the opinions of Spurs fans.

Reaction from Spurs fans to the club’s birthday post for Aurier can be seen in the tweets below.

These Spurs fans clearly feel that the club should try to sell Aurier in January and replace him with a more defensively-minded full-back.

What do we think?

Aurier has actually been very impressive under Mourinho so far, with just one performance against Wolves dropping under a 7.0 rating from whoscored. It seems as if the Portuguese manager trusts the £18 million rated man to be his number one right-back and will be hoping that he can cut out the defensive mistakes from his game and turn him into a top-quality defender.
