Spurs fans were less than impressed to hear this week that signing a new right-back in January is no longer a pressing issue for Jose Mourinho.
According to the Athletic (via Daily Hotspur), Spurs remain keen on strengthening at right-back and are considering Norwich’s Max Aarons as a long-term target but signing someone in that position in January looks unlikely. This will perhaps come as a surprise to many Spurs fans, with Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters the only natural right-backs at the club.
Aurier has been in excellent form under Mourinho since he was appointed, with the Ivory Coast international averaging a 7.25 rating across the season. However, the 27-year-old is prone to defensive mistakes and with Walker-Peters reportedly set to leave on loan in January, Spurs fans are desperate for some competition for Aurier in the first-team.
Do Spurs need to sign a right-back in January?
Yes
No
Reaction from Spurs fans to the January plans can be seen in the tweets below.
So lets do the math here. We are loaning out KWP. Nobody thinks Foyth and Aurier are good enough, but we don’t need a RB.
This club is dead.

All those thousands of Spurs fans must be seeing something different than Jose! How depressing

I’m all for reporting majority of stories as you do but ones like these, let’s maybe skip over please? Aurier at right-back has caused me health problems.

These Spurs fans are clearly less than happy with Mourinho’s reported plans in January and seem desperate to sign a new right-back.
What do we think?
Full-backs seem to be the most pressing issue for Spurs at the moment and although Aurier may have convinced Mourinho that he is good enough, he is yet to do the same with fans. The North London club have kept just two clean sheets in the Premier League all season and defensive reinforcements must be brought in in January if they are to claim a top-four spot.
