Some Southampton fans can’t stop raving about their striker Danny Ings, despite their 2-1 loss to Newcastle United on Sunday in the Premier League.

The Saints were dragged back in the Premier League relegation battle after two consecutive wins in the last two weeks. Against Steve Bruce’s Magpies, they were a goal up thanks to Danny Ings’ third goal in as many games.

But the second-half saw Newcastle get a goal each through Jonjo Shelvey and Federico Fernandez, seeing them pick up their second consecutive win in the league (BBC).

Southampton fans: Is Ings the best striker outside the top six currently?

No question about it!

No question about it!

There's many better!

Despite the defeat, Southampton fans have realised Ings’ goalscoring ability and are hailing the former Liverpool man for his performances.

Ings has got to be the best Striker outside the traditional ‘top 6’ + Leicester. 11 goals, 5 consecutive goals, 4 against the top 6. Unbelievable return for a player in a team who are 18th. Ings is on fire #saintsfc pic.twitter.com/0jDm12nmRK

So far this season, the Englishman has been in fine form for the Saints in the Premier League. He has found the back of the net 11 times in all competitions, with nine of them coming in the Premier League. He also has one assist to his name. He has made 18 appearances in all competitions.

Last season, he was on a temporary loan deal at St Mary’s Stadium. He found the back of the net eight times in all competitions, racking up three assists as well. But he had featured in only 25 games in all competitions.

This past summer, Southampton signed Ings for a fee of £20 million from Liverpool. At Anfield, he had played 25 times in all competitions. He had racked up a tally of four goals and had a single assist to his name too. He had joined the club from Burnley.

What do we think?

Ings is certainly an underrated striker today. He has scored 50% of Southampton’s goals this season, as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men have found the back of the net only 18 times in the Premier League this season.

His numbers last season were also very impressive. If he had played more games, perhaps, Southampton would not have struggled in front of goal as the £16.2m-rated star (TransferMartk) is showing what the Saints may have missed.
