Some Southampton fans are gushing about the performance of midfielder James Ward-Prowse following his impressive showing for the club against Norwich City on Wednesday.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men had a huge chance of climbing up the Premier League table against the Canaries last night. And the win over Norwich helped them do just that.

Goals from Danny Ings and Ryan Bertrand in the first half proved enough, even though Finland international Teemu Pukki did pull one back for the Canaries in the second-half (BBC).

Some Southampton fans are raving about the performance of Ward-Prowse, who assisted the first goal and took the corner that led to Bertrand’s goal just before half-time. One fan even mentioned that he felt the Englishman was better than a peak Andres Iniesta, whilst another name-checked David Beckham.

Southampton fans: Does Ward-Prowse deserve a top-six club?

He does well for that

He does well for that

He can't leave!

Ward-Prowse has been in impressive form for the Saints so far this season, scoring four times and racking up a tally of three assists too. He has played a total of 18 games in all competitions so far this season.

In the last five Premier League games, Ward-Prowse has been involved in as many as four goals. Two have been goals, while the others have been assists.

A product of the Southampton youth academy, Ward-Prowse has risen up the pecking order at the club ever since he made his debut back in the 2011-12 campaign in the League Cup. That was when Southampton were in the Championship.

Last season, the 25-year-old Englishman played 29 times in all competitions for the club. He got seven goals but could not get a single assist.

What do we think?

This season, Ward-Prowse, who is valued at £16.2 million (as per Transfermarkt), has contributed to as many goals as he did last season when he has played less than half the games. That is a sign of maturity. Over the years, his set-piece taking ability has only got better and last night was a true reflection of that.

If he keeps this sort of form going, he could well be in with a shout for the England national team for the upcoming Euros next year. More than that, his creative abilities will be key to helping Southampton avoid relegation this season.
