Some Southampton fans can’t stop hailing the performance of midfielder Stuart Armstrong in their recent 2-0 win over Chelsea in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

The Saints picked up another win in the league and it came against Frank Lampard’s Blues, who had managed to overcome the challenge of Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham this past weekend. Goals from young Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond helped the Saints seal a huge win and they climbed up to 14th in the league.

Southampton fans: Was Armstrong the best player against Chelsea?

Armstrong was starting the game in midfield and the former Celtic star has racked up rave reviews from many Southampton fans. They can’t stop gushing about him.

Armstrong arrived at Southampton from Scottish giants Celtic in the summer of 2018 for a fee of around £7million.

This season, the Scotland international has been a regular in midfield for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men. He has played 14 times in all competitions so far, with 13 of those appearances coming in the Premier League itself. The game against Chelsea was his first of the season for the Saints.

Last season, Armstrong had played 32 times in the Premier League for the club. He racked up four goals and had two assists to his name as well. His contributions proved crucial in the club’s Premier League survival towards the end of the season.

What do we think?

The 27-year-old picked up a WhoScored rating of 7.38 against Chelsea; the best of his season so far. Indeed, while it was a very good performance, he needs to keep these up and Southampton will be closer to the top ten as they are currently.
