Some Southampton fans are fuming about the club’s latest tweet which saw them post a video having their defenders do some sponsorship for WowHydrate.

The Saints aren’t in the best position in the Premier League this season. They’ve lost their last two games, having endured defeats to West Ham United and Steve Bruce’s 11th placed Newcastle United last weekend.

They find themselves at the 18th position in the league, only ahead of Norwich City and Watford. They’re the two teams that they’ve beaten in the Premier League so far.

Southampton fans: Is a defender needed in January?

Of course! Our current batch is useless

Some Saints fans are bashing a club’s sponsorship tweet which had Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and Jannick Vestergaard involved.

The Saints have used multiple different formations this season under Ralph Hasenhuttl. They have settled on a 4-4-2 shape in the last five or six games. But they have also played a 4-2-3-1, a 3-5-2 and even a 3-4-3 shape this season.

In the 17 games that have been played so far this season, Southampton have the worst defensive record. They have let in a total of 36 goals – only one more than Norwich. Their 9-0 loss to Leicester City was their worst defeat of the campaign.

When it comes to the attack, Southampton have scored a total of 18 goals in the Premier League. They have the fourth-worst attacking record in the league. Danny Ings has scored nine, contributing to 50% of the club’s goals.

What do we think?

It is fair to say that the club needs to focus on improving their defence. Jan Bednarek, Vestergaard, Stephens and Yoshida haven’t had the best of seasons. The defensive record of the club shows that. Indeed, while the sponsorship tweets aren’t something they can say ‘no’ to, they have to first concentrate on surviving the drop.
