Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United are looking keen to return to the chase of Sander Berge after failing to sign the Liverpool target in the summer transfer window, as per the Sheffield Star.

They claim that the Norwegian midfielder is still being suggested as a potential signing in January.

It is also reported the Berge had rejected the move to Bramall Lane over fears about club potentially fighting for relegation this season.

Sheffield United fans: Would Berge be a good signing?

He will be brilliant!

No, we wouldn't benefit from him!

Whilst the midfielder could re-emerge as a potential target, but Liverpool are also said to be tracking the progress of the KRC Genk midfielder.

Impressing in Belgium

Berge has become one of the highest-rated young players in Belgium, having also drawn links with Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli in recent weeks (talkSPORT via Radio Punto Nuovo).

This season, the midfielder has played 24 times in the Belgian league, scoring twice while playing in defensive midfield. He has played in all five of the club’s Champions League games, featuring against Liverpool and Napoli.

Last season, he played 40 times in all competitions for the Belgian giants, scoring twice and racking up as many as four assists too.

A defensive midfielder by trade, Berge has played 106 times in all competitions for Genk since joining the club from Valerenga in the summer of 2016. He is already a regular for the Norwegian national team, playing 20 times in recent times.

TIF Tactics

As things stand, Sheffield United are playing a 3-5-2 shape, which sees Oliver Norwood play as the defensive midfielder or as the deepest midfielder. John Fleck, John Lundstram play around him, with summer signing Luke Freeman also an option.

This, perhaps, shows how there is a lack of depth in that part of the pitch, even though the club is plying trade in the higher reaches of the Premier League. Berge’s qualities in defensive midfield could be huge for a club like the Blades, considering the stature of the clubs that are after him.
