Newcastle United are said to be keen on bringing in two or three players if possible during the January transfer window.

The Northern Echo believe discussions have taken place between Steve Bruce and the rest of his recruitment team despite the manager playing down the chances of them spending big after Christmas.

According to the report, two of the players on the 58-year-old’s wish list are Mason Holgate and Lewis Gibson of Everton. It’s thought Bruce has spent a significant amount of time monitoring the 23-year-old’s progress who according to Transfermarkt.co.uk is valued at £6.3m.

Newcastle are readying a formal approach with the player’s versatility said to be a key factor in Bruce’s decision to go after him. Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival at Goodison park appears to be imminent and the new manager’s opinion of Holgate will determine whether or not he will be allowed to move on – so for the time being, the Magpies will need to sit tight.

The second Evertonian they reportedly have their sights set on is Lewis Gibson. The 19-year-old made the move to Goodison Park from Newcastle United in 2017 for just shy of £1m but despite having already left the club once – the interest appears genuine.

Gibson left the North-East club because he became disillusioned by the club’s youth set-up at the time but is yet to make a senior appearance for Everton – fuelling speculation that he could himself be interested in a move away with a potential return to the Magpies on the cards.
