A report in the Athletic claims that Leeds United are considering a move for Cenk Tosun in January – as they have cooled their interest in Dwight Gayle.

Tosun has played 49 games for Everton since he arrived from Besiktas for £27m, and in that time, he has scored 10 goals, but under Marco Silva, he was the third-choice striker behind both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Moise Kean.

Silva was sacked by the Toffees on Thursday, but Tosun could still leave the club.

Why Leeds?

Phil Hay mentioned Tosun in his weekly Q & A, and a player like Tosun would be a high calibre signing for Leeds.

One supporter asked if Leeds have a contingency plan in place if Eddie Nketiah departs, to which the journalist replied:

“They have a list of potential strikers in place for if Nketiah goes back. Brewster at Liverpool would be one of those. I had mention of Tosun at Everton too but he’s involved there at the moment and wouldn’t be cheap in terms of wages.

“The club are hopeful that Nketiah stays and they won’t have to act but if they do, they’ll be looking at someone in the same mould – like Brewster. A young Premier League talent. The issue, however, would be game time. Nketiah has had very little and PL clubs want their loanees to play.”

The 28-year-old has 42 caps for Turkey and has performed reasonably well in the Premier League.

The only way Leeds would sign him, however, is if Nketiah goes back to Arsenal.

Problems with Tosun

The main issue for the Whites in their pursuit of Tosun would be his wages.

He earns £60,000 per week and is unlikely to take a pay cut to move to Elland Road.

This means that unless Everton agreed to pay at least a portion of his wages, it is unlikely that Tosun would end up at Leeds.

Tosun has the talent to score goals, and he could provide Marcelo Bielsa with a major boost.

However, unless some sort of arrangement could be made with Everton for the striker’s hefty wages, then the Whites may have to look elsewhere – should Nketiah go back to Arsenal.
