It has been a tough few years for Sunderland fans having dropped from the Premier League down to the EFL League One in back-to-back relegations. The club are attempting to claw their way back up to the Premier League, but must first escape League One and return to the Championship.
To add insult to injury, Newcastle United forward Allan Saint-Maximin teased the Sunderland supporters by claiming that he wished he could score his first goal for his new team against the Black Cats. The comment was a sly dig at how far Sunderland had fallen, however these Sunderland fans were not taking that comment laying down.
Supporters quickly responded to the tweet, suggesting that by the time Sunderland make their way back up to the Premier League, the Frenchman still wouldn’t have scored.
judging by what i have seen..you could’nt hit a barn door at ten paces..

Other fans pointed out that some Sunderland players have scored more goals against Premier League opposition this season than Saint-Maximin, who is valued at £22.5m by transfermarkt.co.uk. Another group of Sunderland supporters dragged Miguel Almiron’s name into the mix, pointing out that he also hasn’t scored since making the move the St. James’ Park in January 2019 (transfermarkt.co.uk).
Think he needs to remember 4 of our players have more goals against premier league clubs this season than this clown

He probably wouldn’t score past us, him and Almiron have less goals this season than Tom Flanagan has against Premier League teams

We could get promoted twice and play you in the derby, and you score, and you still get on the score sheet before Almiron

Don’t worry I’m sure by the time we’re back in the same league you and Almirón will still be waiting on your first goal… pic.twitter.com/xtHHlnjyMh

What do we think?
Until Saint-Maximin and Almiron score, Sunderland fans will surely continue to rub the statistic in their rival fans’ faces. Phil Parkinson will be trying his absolute hardest to ensure Sunderland’s trip back to the Premier League is a quick one.
