All eyes were on Alfredo Morelos this week as he played in Colombia’s match against Peru. While he has scored countless goals for Rangers in recent weeks, his first international goal had eluded him up until this point. However, all of that changed when Morelos scored the winning goal in Colombia’s 1-0 win in the 90th minute.

But as we know, a player’s performance isn’t just judged on their goals scored, but their overall performance as well. So how exactly did Morelos perform over a 90 minute period?

TIF Tactics – What else did Morelos contribute to Colombia?

Colombia had 56% of possession during the game. But while they didn’t necessarily dominate with time on the ball, they achieved 14 shots during the entire game. Unfortunately, only five of those were on target, leaving them with a 35.71% shooting accuracy. The Colombians had a passing accuracy of 87.44%, completing 390 of their 446 passes.

But how does this compare to Morelos’ overall performance? With Morelos averaging 1.02 goals per 90 minutes of football this season, it has become no surprise whenever he manages to find the back of the net. His one goal against Peru reflects what fans expect of him. So let’s dig deeper.

Of Colombia’s 14 shots, Morelos took four of them. But whilst Colombia only hit their target 35.71% of the time, Morelos hit the target three times out of his four attempts, leaving him with a 75% shot accuracy. He completed 22 out of his 28 passes with a 79% accuracy, higher than his 76.5% accuracy 490 minutes on average. He completed 100% of his two passes into the final third and his one pass into the box was accurate.

Morelos attempted eight offensive duels and won three. That brought his offensive duel success rate to 38%, compared to his regular 36.2% success rate overall this season. However, Morelos usually attempts 14.26 offensive duels per 90 minutes on average in the 2019-2020 season.

It appears that Morelos was relatively successful in limited actions during the match. Peru appeared to keep him relatively quiet during the 90-minute match, however switched off a moment too soon. Either way, Rangers fans will be thrilled that El Buffalo will have notched his first international goal. They will hope he can continue his hot streak as he returns to Glasgow. So will Steven Gerrard.
