This week, ex-Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan spoke to Football Insider about Rangers star man Alfredo Morelos. He suggested that with each goal that Morelos scored, the interest from Premier League teams would increase. Whelan insisted that, because of this, each goal scored would cause a bigger headache for Rangers manager Steven Gerrard. He inferred that the implications of Morelos scoring would outweigh the benefits.

“The more goals Morelos keeps scoring, the bigger problem Rangers have got,” said Whelan. “Steven Gerrard’s said Morelos won’t go, but can the board continue to hold on if big offers come in?”

“Privately, Gerrard has to be worried now, and that will be the same until the January window shuts.”

These comments, however, are perhaps a little outlandish. For one, it is Morelos’ job to score. With every goal that he scores, Gerrard will be happy, as it only contributes to Rangers’ current success this season. A law firm wouldn’t be upset if one of their lawyers kept winning lawsuits just because other agencies might be interested in offering him a job, would they? And if every goal means an increased interest from Premier League clubs, that also means an increased transfer value.

Also, Rangers have no obligation to sell the player right now. His contract ends in 2023, according to transfermarket.co.uk. Just because clubs come knocking doesn’t mean Rangers have to sell. Whelan did, however, suggest that eventually, the fee could become too high for the Rangers management to ignore. If that is the case, then Morelos value should continue to rise after the transfer window ends in January as well.

For now, it is crazy to think that Gerrard and the Rangers board would want anything other than for Morelos to continue scoring. At the record Morelos is banging them in right now, he could have well over 50 goals in all competitions by the end of the season. He has scored 22 goals in 26 games for Rangers this season and also managed to score for Colombia this international break (transfermarkt.co.uk). One thing Whelan did get right, however, is that Gerrard will do everything in his power to keep the player at the club.
