According to Claret and Hugh, Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos will no longer have complete control over transfers with the January window around the corner.

Previously, the pair were given the authority to conduct business as they saw fit with the club’s board ignoring its power to veto any deals they believed unwise. However, given what were deemed to be errors during the summer window, the board are said to be wanting more oversight regarding those coming in.

The West Ham board are still said to be backing Pellegrini and Husillos but given the poor run of recent results and lowly position of 16th place in the Premier League table, the pair cannot afford another high-profile error.

TIF Tactics – Is the board’s veto counter-productive in the long-term?

Theoretically, the Manager or Head Coach is the person best placed to make judgements in regards to the players a team needs to improve and typically the Director of Football acts as a go-between the clubs hierarchy and the coaching staff. The veto power that the board are wanting to have suggests they don’t completely trust the judgement of the coaching staff which often causes friction within the club.

Are David Gold and David Sullivan qualified to make judgements on players? The answer has to be no and this kind of approach could put managers off coming to East London long after Pellegrini and Husillos have moved on. It remains to be seen how this alternative arrangement will work and whether or not it’s the beginning of the end for the former Man City boss and his Director of Football.
