Spurs right-back Serge Aurier enjoyed a mixed afternoon with his native Ivory Coast on Tuesday after he scored, but they lost out 2-1 to Ethiopia and fans were less than complimentary of their defender on Twitter.

Aurier, who was captaining Ivory Coast, opened the scoring after just four minutes but could do nothing as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to the home side in the African Cup of Nations qualifying fixture. The 26-year-old has had a mixed career at Spurs since joining from PSG in 2017 and openly admitted to wanting to leave the North London side over the summer.

The right-back has started nine games this season; averaging a 6.95 rating in all competitions. However, Spurs fans are not convinced by the Ivory Coast man due to his terrible displays against Southampton and Bayern Munich in recent times, with many hoping that the club can bring in a new right-back.

Reaction from Spurs fans to Aurier’s international display can be seen in the tweets below.

One fan even described him as a bad version of Wolves’ Adama Traore. Indeed, the Old Gold man has enjoyed plenty of success this season in his newly-found wing-back position at times, which is perhaps where the fan drew the comparison between the two. However, Traore has managed to produce five assists and two goals.

Spurs fans are clearly split over Aurier’s ability with many feeling that Aurier should be starting whereas others feel that Juan Foyth should be the number one right-back.

What do we think?

Aurier has proved at times that he can be a very effective attacking right-back but erratic decisions, such as his sending off against Southampton, which seems to have prevented him from pushing on and becoming the club’s first-choice full-back.

His fellow right-backs Kyle Walker-Peters and Foyth found game-time hard to come by under former boss Mauricio Pochettino and perhaps this international goal is the confidence boost Aurier needs to truly nail down a spot.
