Spurs fans were greeted to the exciting news that the club are interested in Napoli striker Dries Mertens and could attempt to sign the Belgian on a free transfer in the summer when his contract expires.
According to Il Mattino, (via HotspurRelated) Spurs may look to sign the Serie A striker on a free transfer next summer. The Napoli man is now 32-years-old but is still seen by the majority of Spurs fans as a superb option, especially if the club are able to bring him in on a free transfer.
Mertens has been with Napoli since 2013 after joining from PSV Eindhoven and has established himself as a Napoli star in his six years with the club, recently overtaking Diego Maradona’s goal tally for the club.
It is no surprise therefore that Spurs are interested in the Belgian international and will be hoping to convince the striker to make the move to North London in the summer.
The best reactions from Spurs fans to the possible Mertens signing can be seen in the tweets below.

What do we think?
Mertens is a proven goalscorer with both Napoli and Belgium, so would be a superb signing for Spurs if they can bring him to the Premier League. There are some concerns from fans over Mertens’ age, but the 32-year-old has already hit seven goals for the Italian side this season in all competitions, so the Belgian could bring a serious goalscoring threat to the Spurs’ attack and perhaps take some of the pressure off Harry Kane in the process.
