A lot of Spurs fans were unhappy to hear that Mauricio Pochettino has made a formal approach to sign Barcelona midfielder Carles Alena on loan in January, with many fans feeling he is not good enough for the Premier League.

According to Mundo Deportivo via HotspurRelated, Pochettino is keen on a move for the La Masia graduate in January, a move that could potentially see Christian Eriksen depart the club.

Pochettino is reportedly close friends with Alena’s agent and Barcelona are keen to see Alena get some game-time, so a move to Spurs could prove ideal for both clubs involved.

The creative midfielder made his Barcelona debut in April 2017 but has struggled to force his way into the first-team in recent years having made just 35 appearances in total for the Spanish giants.

A loan move seems the most likely conclusion, with Alena seemingly having release clause of £65 million, but Spurs fans don’t seem keen on welcoming the 21-year-old in January.

Reaction from fans to the latest Alena update can be seen in the tweets below:

Other fans recognise the youngster’s talent and seem more than happy for Pochettino to bring the 21-year-old to Hotspur Way.

It seems as if the majority of fans feel as if Alena is not the man to solve their current predicament as other more pressing issues still remain.

What do we think?

There is no doubting that Alena is a talented player but you fear that a loan move could result in a similar situation to that of Dani Ceballos at Arsenal; who has struggled for form since his loan move from Real Madrid in the summer. Alena would also have to compete with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli for a place in attacking midfield, which suggests that he would struggle for game-time in the Premier League. However, it seems as if Pochettino is very keen on the youngster so a January loan move materialise.
