New Spurs boss Jose Mourinho could be set to make a lot of changes in the upcoming January transfer window and it seems as if OGC Nice right-back Youcef Atal could be the next man on Mourinho’s list, but he will face competition from North London rivals Arsenal for his signature.

According to 90min football Spurs are battling it out with Arsenal to sign the Algerian defender in January as they look to improve on their struggling defence. The attacking full-back has averaged an impressive 7.27 rating for the French side so far this season and could be the ideal man to provide competition for Serge Aurier in Mourinho’s side.

The 23-year-old’s strong performances have attracted the attention of several sides across Europe and he recently told French outlet Canalplus that he believes he has the ability to play for a top club. Atal is most comfortable at right-back but has often featured further forward for Nice since joining from Belgian side KV Kortrijk in 2018.

Following Kieran Trippier’s departure over the summer, Spurs have looked desperate for a right-back who can compete with Aurier; who has often looked out of his depth at times, most notably against Bayern Munich. Although, he did manage to secure a rating of 8.2 last night against Olympiacos, so things could be looking up.

Atal is currently valued at £22.5 million by transfermarkt and his performances both last and this season have shown that he is ready to make the step up to a bigger club.

Atal earned a place in the Ligue 1 team of the season for his standout debut campaign in France; averaging a 7.48 for Nice across the season. If Mourinho does opt to make a move for the 23-year-old right-back, he could prove to be a very shrewd signing for the North London club in a position that has been a problem already this season.
