According to BBC Sport, Manchester City have opened talks with England star Raheem Sterling regarding a new long-term contract. The forward’s current deal still has until 2023 to run but it appears the Manchester club are keen to secure the player’s future beyond that in a deal set to make him one of the Premier League’s highest ever earners.

Sterling has been in the public eye not only for his excellent performances on a football pitch but also for his strong and very public stance on racism and various other social issues. The player made the controversial move from Liverpool to Manchester in 2015 for just shy of £50m and it’s thought his value has almost trebled since then making it a fantastic piece of business.

TIF Tactics – How much is Sterling worth?

The 24-year-old is currently valued at £126m according to Transfermarkt.co.uk and has come on leaps and bounds under his current coach Pep Guardiola. It’s thought the offer on the table could see Sterling earn £450k-per-week but that his acceptance of the offer could be dependent on the future of Guardiola whom he has prospered under.

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium Sterling has won two Premier League titles, three League Cups, an FA Cup and a Community Shield. In 206 league appearances for the Cityzens Sterling has scored 83 goals and provided 70 assists – a remarkable return that has seen him classed as one of world football’s most exciting forwards.

Given the quality of his performances, particularly over the last couple of seasons, it’s difficult to argue with the above valuation even if the figures do sound crazy. When you consider the current climate regarding transfer fees and player salaries, you cannot deny Sterling is as deserving of that sort of money as anybody else.
