A lot of Liverpool fans on Twitter were unhappy with the news that club captain Jordan Henderson had recovered from illness and is expected to start against Manchester City on Sunday.

Henderson, who signed from Sunderland in 2011, has had a mixed eight years with the club, only really breaking into the first team in the 2013/14 season. Of course, Henderson lifted the Champions League trophy with the Reds last season but many fans still feel as if the 29-year-old shouldn’t be starting.

The English midfielder had a lot to live up to after he was made captain in 2015 following the departure of Steven Gerrard but it seems as if the former Sunderland man won’t reach the same legendary status that Gerrard did amongst Reds fans. Henderson had missed the 2-1 win over Genk in midweek due to illness but is expected to be fit and ready to start against Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday.

The game represents a chance for Liverpool to go nine points clear of their title rivals and it seems as if the majority of Liverpool fans would prefer Henderson to start on the bench.

Reaction from Reds fans to the news of Henderson’s recovery can be seen in the tweets below.

These tweets show that a lot of Liverpool fans are not too happy with the news that Henderson is expected to start on Sunday.

What do we think?

Henderson should not be underestimated by Reds fans as he clearly brings an element of leadership to the Liverpool side, so it would not be surprising to see him start against a side such as Manchester City.

His recent form has been strong too, with a goal against Spurs and a solid display away at Aston Villa. However, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been in sensational form recently, so it is easy to see the Reds fans’ frustrations; with Henderson likely to be preferred to the 26-year-old against City.
