Everton’s hierarchy is interested in signing Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall, according to a report published by the Mirror.

As touted in Wednesday’s edition of the Mirror, the Toffees are reportedly interested in making the English defender an Everton player after consistent scouting (via Nottingham Post).

Competiton for the signature

Within the Mirror‘s report, it was also suggested that the Toffees may face some tough competition from other Premier League clubs to make the signing of the player who spent the season on loan with Rangers (per Transfermarkt).

Alongside Marco Silva’s side, Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United have also been scouting the 22-year-old centre-back (via Nottingham Post), while Arsenal are also interested in his signature (per Nottingham Post).

Should the Toffees be looking above Championship level for potential signings?

TiF Tactics – Is Worrall a good move for Everton?

First and foremost, it is absolutely certain that the Toffees need backup in the centre of defence due to only having three senior options in the position (as per Transfermarkt).

At his disposal, Silva only has Yerry Mina, Mason Holgate and Michael Keane to chose from for the centre of his backline.

While it is clear that the Toffees need more centre-back cover, it is not completely certain that Worrall is the right man to be chasing.

In the division below the Goodison Park club, the 22-year-old Englishman has 6.95/10 average rating for the season so far (per Whoscored), which is respectable if a little uninspiring.

Looking deeper into his statistics, when compared to Mina, Worrall looks more impressive than his average rating would suggest.

Everton’s Colombian has an average of 1.1 interceptions per 90, 4.1 clearances and 0.5 blocks, where Worrall also has 1.1 interceptions per 90, but 5.8 clearances and 1.2 blocks (as per Whoscored).

So, should Everton be able to strike a reasonable deal for the £5.4-million rated man (Transfermarkt), he could represent suitable centre-back strength in depth for the Toffees.
