Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has been named as the new manager of MLS side Montreal Impact. The Frenchman will take up his first managerial position since his unsuccessful spell at Monaco in France. Henry enjoyed a spell in the MLS as a player with the New York Red Bulls where he scored 52 goals in 135 appearances.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Henry said: “It’s an honour to coach the Montreal Impact and return to MLS. It’s a league I know well, in which I had some very nice moments. To be in Quebec, in Montreal, which has an enormous multicultural heritage, it’s extraordinary. I’ve always kept an eye on the club and now I’m here.”

These Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to wish their former captain well.

What do we think?

Henry spent just 103 days in charge of Ligue 1 side AS Monaco before being sacked by the club. The French outfit found themselves languishing in the relegation zone and it was a steep learning curve for one the Premier League’s greatest ever players. The former Arsenal star scored 228 goals during his time in North London, making him the club’s all-time greatest goalscorer but management is a totally different ball game.

His playing career commands a high level of respect but that will only take the 42-year-old so far. Henry was said to have been interested in the top job at Arsenal following Arsene Wenger’s departure but the club opted to appoint Unai Emery instead. This opportunity provides the former striker with a fresh start and the chance to silence his doubters.
