Noel Whelan was speaking exclusively to Football Insider when commenting on apparent ‘Leeds United target’ Rhian Brewster.

Brewster is just 19-years-old and was on the bench during Liverpool’s 4-1 win against Genk in the Champions League Group Stage, however, sadly the young man didn’t manage to get any first-team minutes in that game, but it’s a positive sign that Jurgen Klopp has recognised the teenager despite having a squad full of talented options.

Would you like to see Rhian Brewster at Leeds United in January?

When Whelan spoke to Football Insider, he said: “The whisper I’m hearing is that Brewster is a Leeds target. That would be a really exciting signing.” Now the former Leeds man said ‘signing’, but we would guess that this would be a short term loan deal until the end of the season, if the move takes place this January. It would seem highly unlikely that Liverpool would be willing to let their young talent leave permanently.

The pundit has described Brewster as “quick, young and ready to explode“, which is all you could ask for in a 19-year-old that will be playing second in command behind Patrick Bamford.

Brewster has been playing most of his football in the Premier League 2, where he has made seven appearances and has scored a total of four goals while also registering one assist. These stats aren’t the best you’ll ever see, however, perhaps the change in scenery and in level will help the young man show his full potential, which Liverpool obviously believe is quite high, considering they brought him along to their Champions League match.

Verdict

This would be a good bit of business by Leeds United. Obviously, we believe this would be a loan deal, as we can’t see Liverpool letting him go. Nevertheless, a loan would probably be the best option; that way it wouldn’t matter if Brewster didn’t get much game time, as he would likely be a backup to Bamford anyway.
