A Leeds United source has spoken to Football Insider about a ‘private meeting’ that was held between Marcelo Bielsa and Tyler Roberts.

Roberts has managed to score one goal in his first two starts this season, with the goal coming in a 2-0 win against QPR in what was the Welshman’s first start in the Championship.

Despite this good run of form, Bielsa has apparently been critical over the 20-year-old’s recent outings, with a Leeds source saying: “Bielsa has held a private meeting with Roberts explaining to him he needs to be more consistent and add regular goals to his game to nail down a regular starting spot in the starting XI.”

As mentioned, Roberts did score in his first start and he then started in the last game against Blackburn Rovers. The 20-year-old had a decent game last time out but didn’t manage to add to his goal tally, which seems to be Bielsa biggest criticism of the attacking-midfielder.

Verdict

We think that Bielsa needs to have started Roberts more consistently before apparently criticising him. You can’t really tell much about a player in 287 minutes of football, with most of the time coming from appearances off the bench.

Having only being started twice and then being criticised over form is pretty harsh, considering Patrick Bamford recently had an awful run of form and has still only scored once in 10 games from the striker position.

If the Welshman starts the next two or three and continues to not score or assist, then he can be fully criticised. However until he’s been given a fair chance to prove himself, it’s unfair for him to be getting pulled aside for private ‘one-to-one‘ talks.
