Birmingham City target Nahki Wells has revealed that he wants to stay at Queens Park Rangers on a permanent basis, should he have the opportunity to do so.

Wells, who is currently on at QPR from Burnley, was talking exclusively to TalkSPORT recently. He revealed that he has aims about staying at the London club on a permanent basis.

The Bermudian said: “Yeah, of course (on QPR stay). I’m just taking it one week at a time and I’m just focused on trying to come together and reach the goal that we all want and that’s trying to finish in the play-offs and get promoted because there’s real belief that is possible.

“Individually, I just want to do as well as I can because that’s going to help to propel us into that position. If I’m doing that, I’m pretty sure the club would want to keep me and an opportunity will present itself.”

The forward drew links with the Blues last week, when the Sun (via Birmingham Mail) said that Pep Clotet’s men are one of the interested parties in the player.

In impressive form

The 29-year-old has done well in front of goal for QPR this season. He has played 14 times in the Championship so far, finding the back of the net as many as nine times for the London side.

He had joined the club from the Clarets on a temporary loan deal this past summer. This is his second consecutive loan spell at QPR as he had also spent the previous campaign at Loftus Road.

Last season, Wells had played 43 times in all competitions for the club. He found the back of the net only nine times, racking up just six assists too. He has already gone past the previous campaign’s goalscoring tally.

In the 2017-18 campaign, Wells had played nine times in the Premier League for Burnley, the club he had joined in the summer of 2017 from Huddersfield Town for a fee of £5million.

TIF Tactics

17 goals in the 2015-16 Championship season for the Terriers is still Wells’ highest goalscoring tally in his career so far. And the way he has played this season for QPR, he seems well on his way to catching up on that.

As for Birmingham, Clotet has usually used a flat 4-4-2 formation this season, utilising the 3-5-2 on two occasions as well. Lukas Jutkiewicz and Alvaro Gimenez have been the club’s first-choice striking pair, with the pair sharing a total of five goals amongst themselves.

That isn’t quite what Clotet would want from his side. If the strikers have scored only five goals together, it doesn’t really give too promising a vibe. Kerim Mrabti has also played up front this season, but he too has a tally of just one assist to his name in eight appearances for the club.

Clearly, more striking power is needed upfront to take Birmingham higher up in the table. They have scored the third-lowest number of goals so far this season-8. If they want to push up into the top half of the table, they need a goalscorer. As things stand, Wells has scored more goals in the Championship than the whole Birmingham side combined. A move for him would be very welcome, although it appears the 29-year-old may have ruled such a possibility out.
