Aston Villa fans have shared their opinions on Twitter that injured defender James Chester should not get back into the Villa first team when he recovers from injury.

This comes from a tweet shared by Twitter account Aston Villa News who asked their followers if they think Chester should come straight back into the side when fit. In the tweet, they linked an article from Birmingham Live, which details how the centre-half has stepped up his rehab.

The 30-year-old made 28 appearances for Villa last season in their promotion-winning season. But his season was cut short after suffering a long-term knee injury (BBC Sport) in late January (Transfermarkt), and he’s still yet to appear in the first-team to date.

But now, as the defender appears to be stepping up his recovery, some Villa fans don’t believe Chester should get back into the first team anytime soon.

Here’s a sample of Villa fans not wanting Chester to return to the side:

What do we think?

It was sad to see Chester suffer such a bad injury during Villa’s Championship-winning season. During the 17 games Chester missed through injury in the second half of the season, Villa conceded 15 goals (TransferMarkt). Now that Villa are back in the Premier League, they have conceded 16 goals in 10 league games (TransferMarkt), which may suggest that his return could come as a boost if he replicates his form from last season. But, despite this statistic, the Villa faithful don’t think the return of Chester is what they need to improve their defence.
