Spurs slam Sanchez

Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to slam Davinson Sanchez for his performance in the 2-2 draw against Olympiacos on Wednesday evening.

The Colombian was drafted in to play at right-back by Mauricio Pochettino in Greece, but did little to impress in a shaky and lethargic display.

And his outing was emblematic of a disappointing team display, with two first half goals from Harry Kane and Lucas Moura eventually being pegged back to deny last year’s Champions League finalists of all three points.

Sanchez’s inclusion came off the back of Pochettino failing to include Serge Aurier in his matchday squad, despite the Ivorian impressing during the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace – his first appearance of the new campaign – with former Spurs man Darren Bent even singling him out for praise in an interview with Football Insider.

But Sanchez struggled to replicate that positive impact on Wednesday, and got both barrels from supporters on social media.

Here are some of the best tweets from disgruntled fans.

Sanchez is a fine defender, there is no doubt about that.

The 23-year-old looks as if he has the potential to kick on and become a real long term solution for Pochettino, but his future does not lie at right-back.

Sanchez had played 144 professional matches prior to this evening, as per Transfermarkt. This was just the second time he had not played at the centre of defence, and it showed.

Last term, when he was playing in his preferred position, he was generally excellent, averaging 1.6 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, and 4.4 clearances per match, as per Whoscored.

But his skill set has simply not translated to a spot out wide, and he has struggled to make the right kind of impact on the front foot.

Sanchez has averaged just one successful dribble per game so far this term, as well as just 0.3 key passes and no crosses, as per Whoscored.

By contrast, Aurier has made two key passes, an assist, a successful cross, and was dispossessed just one time during his solitary Premier League appearance so far this season, as per Whoscored.

It is painfully evident who Pochettino must back from here on out.

Sanchez can still have a massive future in north London, but he must be played in the right position.
