It’s time for Daniel Levy to step up again after a report from Marca claimed Tottenham are ‘convinced’ that Christian Eriksen will join Real Madrid.

The Marca report made for tough reading for Tottenham fans. It claimed Eriksen had rejected all offers put to him by Tottenham and that his lawyers had been making calls to clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid.

Eriksen is free to talk to overseas clubs in January and can sign a pre-contract agreement ahead of a free transfer in the summer.

Marca also claimed that while Levy had held talks over a £106.7m (€120m) move in the summer of 2018, no official bid has been received.

The report ended with the line that will strike at the hearts of Spurs fans: “Tottenham are convinced that Eriksen will end up wearing the white of Real Madrid.”

It’s Levy time!

If Eriksen is going to go – and that’s looking more likely as time goes on – Levy has to do two things for Tottenham.

Firstly, he must do everything possible to get a fee for Eriksen in January. Letting him go for free next summer would be a hammer blow for such a valuable asset.

Despite the fact that he’s available for free next summer, there’s every chance a club will pay a fee to secure his services early and to ensure they land him ahead of rivals. If Eriksen is available for free next summer, he’s not going to be short of suitors.

Secondly, Levy must sanction a big-money move for Mauricio Pochettino to replace one of his best players. Levy broke the club record with a move for Tanguy Ndombele this summer, and also brought in Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso.

However, if Eriksen goes, they need a player who can offer the same creativity and ability to rip a defence apart.

Levy has been described as a “canny operator” in the transfer market in the past, but it’s time for him to step up again and prove his worth for Spurs.
