Alan Shearer has hit back at Micahel Owen on Twitter after explosive claims the former striker made in his autobiography.

Owen claims that he never wanted to move to Newcastle and that it remains the only regret he’s had in his career.

Owen also took a dig at Newcastle fans for thinking it’s a big club, saying only the fanbase and the stadium would indicate that.

Shearer hit back on Tuesday morning, linking a video clip from Owen saying, “All I did at the end of my career for six or seven years, I hated it, I couldn’t wait to retire for most of it.”

Shearer replied, “Yes Michael, we thought that also, whilst on £120k a week…..”

Shearer v Owen rumbles on

Owen talked about the falling out he had with Shearer which hit its peak when Owen seemingly said he wasn’t fit to start the game against Aston Villa in the last game of the 2008/09 season. Newcastle went on to lose the game 1-0 and were relegated with Owen coming on for the last quarter of the game.

It was the last game Owen played for Newcastle before he moved to Man United.

In the Mirror, Owen claimed he only knew Shearer was seething with him afterwards and that Shearer had accused him of having his eyes on a move, but either way it’s a rift that looks set to carry on now.

It’s a harsh comment with Shearer referencing the £120,000-a-week salary Owen was on at the time – wages that would have put him at the top of the Premier League ladder.

Terrace talk

One Newcastle fan loved what Shearer said and responded immediately saying, “Game, set and match, Alan”.

Another said Owen wasn’t “worth it” and that he “can’t live with the fact his career was unfulfilled due to being a crock. Who cares about him he’s irrelevant.”

Safe to say that Owen isn’t a popular man in Newcastle this morning.

Other fans were delighted with what Shearer put out on Twitter, with one saying it was “Classic Alan”.
