David de Gea has signed a new contract with Man United that will keep him at Old Trafford until at least 2023.

Man United announced that the stopper had signed a four-year deal, with an option for another year, on Monday afternoon.

Athletic journalist Adam Crafton said the deal “wasn’t ever in too much doubt” despite what he called “agent-led” delays.

He added, “he’s been pretty set on staying since Christmas”.

Big boost for United

All the noise coming out of Old Trafford might have been that de Gea was going to sign a new contract, but with the vulnerability of his old deal, which was set to expire in 2020, this will come as a big relief.

It was officially announced by Man United this afternoon.

De Gea would have been free to talk to overseas clubs about a summer move as a free agent in January, with Juventus heavily linked to the stopper.

De Gea didn’t have a good 18/19 season, with just seven clean sheets and 54 goals conceded, but he wasn’t the only United player who disappointed last campaign.

In the 17/18 season, he kept the most clean sheets of any stopper in the Premier League – 18, with just 28 goals conceded, just one more than champions Man City.

In 367 appearances for the club, he’s won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the UEFA Europa League and the Community Shield

Terrace talk – fans delighted

Man United fans were understandably delighted with the news and took to Twitter to react, with one fan calling the news “unbelievable”.

Another said he “was already on his way to becoming a United legend”.
