Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas has said that Newcastle’s interest in Hull’s goal-scoring sensation Jarrod Bowen is genuine and that a new move to sign him in January could be on the cards.

Douglas said that Bowen ‘ticks every box’ as Newcastle look to bring in young and upcoming talent to the club.

Douglas was writing in a Q&A with fans on the Chronicle website when a fan asked, “Newcastle interest in Hull’s Jarrod Bowen? Was there an offer made of £14m that was left on the table? Hull were confident of him signing a new deal but there are rumours he wants a move to #NUFC and will run down his contract?”

Douglas replied saying, “They like Bowen and Steve Nickson’s scouting team have watched him a few times.

“Their interest in Bowen in the summer was genuine – although I do recall Steve Bruce playing down any imminent bid in the rain at Preston.

“They simply wouldn’t meet Hull’s asking price – but in January, with six months left on his deal, will the Tigers cut that £20million tag? That’s on them but Newcastle’s plan is to start bringing in younger, up-and-coming talent and he ticks every box.”

TiF tactics – What would Newcastle be getting?

22-year-old Bowen has been with Hull since 2014 and the winger has quickly established himself as a goal machine with 40 goals in just 109 appearances for the club.

He’s already scored three goals in five Championship games this season and added one assist.

The problem for Hull is that he is out of contract in the summer and could leave for free if they don’t sign him up on another long-term deal.

He’s been linked with some big clubs, with Tottenham credited with an interest in January.

If he doesn’t sign a new contract Hull are surely likely to try and land a fee for him in January and that could open the door for Newcastle.

According to stats site WyScout, per 90 minutes in the 19/20 season, Bowen boasts an xG of 0.62, takes almost four shots on goal and has been successful with every cross he’s attempted.

He’s a hugely forward-thinking player who makes five dribbles and registers three touches in the box per 90 minutes. If Newcastle can get him for a cut-price fee in January they could be landing a real bargain.

Is that likely?

There are plenty of clubs likely to be interested in Bowen if Hull do want to move him on.

However, according to Douglas in the same Q&A, Newcastle are likely to invest in January and he said, “There is money available, yes [at Newcatle]. I think they’ll be active.”

Bowen would be just the sort of signing that could start to see the fans come back on board.
