Mills blasts Jones after sending off

Danny Mills has claimed that Steven Gerrard will be fuming with Jordan Jones for his late sending off in the Old Firm clash on Sunday.

The Rangers winger was dismissed in the 96th minute for a scything lunge on Celtic defender Mauritz Bauer with the Hoops already 2-0 ahead, thanks to goals from Odsonne Edouard and Jonny Hayes.

But Sky Sports pundit Mills has spoken out in anger against the 24-year-old.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “A ridiculous sending off at the end. What is the point? That’s just playing up to the fans.

“Steven Gerrard must be absolutely fuming with that.”

How bad was Jones’ sending off?

Ordinarily, this might not have been such a big deal.

After all, it was a 96th-minute dismissal with the Gers 2-0 down, and the chances of them coming back to mount a late comeback were non-existent.

Under those circumstances, losing a player is salt in the wound.

On Sunday, however, there was plenty for Gerrard to be fuming about, and this was just the icing on the cake.

What was going through Jones’ head? The challenge on Bauer was malicious and desperate, and there is absolutely no place for it in the game.

When you then factor in that it was an Old Firm, at home, in front of a baying crowd who have just watched you concede a late second goal to kill the game off, this was a rash and, quite frankly, stupid tackle from Jones.

Perhaps most worrying, however, will be the fact that Jones could well be sidelined for some time after picking up a knee injury in the incident.

According to The Scottish Sun, the Northern Ireland international could be facing months in the treatment room, with serious concerns over potential ligament damage.

If that is the case, then Gerrard will be beyond livid.

To jeopardise your season in a moment of madness is borderline unforgivable.

Here’s hoping it doesn’t come to that.
