Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on captain Jordan Henderson for his contribution in the first half against Chelsea.

The Reds took led at the interval at Stamford Bridge thanks to a sublime free-kick routine lashed home by Trent Alexander-Arnold before Roberto Firmino added a second, but many fans were quick to sing the praises of their skipper, and it’s easy to see why.

Aside from a mishap involving the colour of his socks, the midfielder barely put a foot wrong in the first half, and he continually looked to set the Reds on the front foot with a fine range of passing.

One ball in particular in the opening exchanges nearly tore the Blues to shreds, and but for the last ditch intervention of Cesar Azpilicueta, could have been an even earlier breakthrough for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Here are some of the best tweets from fans.

Henderson sometimes gets a lot of stick from supporters, but there was nothing to criticise in his performance today.

He was as assured and authoritative as you’d want your captain to be, with enough grit and fight to deal with a Chelsea side who were threatening at times.

And that has been the way of it for much of this season.

So far this term, Henderson has averaged 2.9 tackles per 90 minutes, as well as 1.4 clearances, as per Whoscored.

He has also misplaced just 7.5 short passes per game, and it’s that battling mentality and efficiency in possession that makes him such a useful player for the Reds.

The 29-year-old may not be the most glamorous player in the world, but in a team as star-studded as Liverpool’s it’s important to have a workhorse or two to act as a foundation and a counterweight for the more eye-catching members of the squad.

That is certainly a role that Henderson has taken to with great aplomb, and you can see in his performances that he relishes the responsibility that comes with wearing the armband for one of the greatest clubs in world football.
