Stephen Gerrard is considering dropping defensive mainstay Connor Goldson for the Scottish League Cup game against Livingston, according to Football Insider.

They claim that he is thinking about changing up his defence, with Nikola Katic, George Edmundson and Filip Helander all available.

Goldson and Helander have played the last two games for Rangers – the 1-0 win against Feyenoord and the 4-0 win against St Johnstone on Sunday.

Who will line-up for Rangers in the centre of defence?

Goldson, a defensive colossus who stands at over 6ft3, has played the full 90 minutes in all eight Europa League qualifiers, all six Premiership games and the 1-0 win against Feyenoord last week.

He scored the all-important second goal in the 4-0 win against St Johnstone on Sunday and has rarely missed a game since arriving from Brighton last summer.

He’s due a rest and it will be interesting to see who comes in if he is dropped.

Edmundson partnered Heldander in the last round of the cup, the 3-0 win against East Fife.

Katic has played four Premiership games but was dropped from the last two matchday squads.

Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell thinks that Helander will play, with one from Edmundson and Katic alongside him.

One Rangers fan agreed with him and said that Goldson has been “poor since the start of the season”.

This fan wants to see Edmundson get a start, while another said that players like Katic and Edmundson have shown they’re good enough, but said “wholesale change is 50/50 glorious success or potential abject failure”.

The cup is important to Rangers – silverware is needed at Ibrox – and this will be on Gerrard’s mind. We think Edmundson and Helander will get the nod after the pair were successful together in the last round of the cup.
