talkSPORT host Adrian Durham has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino is out of touch with Tottenham fans who want the club to win a trophy.

Durham was talking on Drive (talkSPORT, Wednesday, 5pm) after Spurs were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two Colchester on Tuesday night.

“I’ve heard people say Pochettino has worked miracles with this Spurs team,” Durham said. “When exactly were these miracles? I have no idea.

“The only difference now is that they’re regularly finishing above Arsenal and that’s about Arsenal being rubbish. He’s no miracle worker. Pochettino is out of touch with the majority of Spurs’ fans as they want to win a trophy.

“He has a choice. He either stays at Spurs and moans constantly and they keep losing games and going out of cups. Or he does the bolder thing and walks away. How about he stays in touch with the fans at the very least?

“Harry Kane should have been on the bench at the very least last night.”

Tottenham trophy hunt

The last time Tottenham won a trophy was back in 2008 when they beat Chelsea in the League Cup.

Fans would love to see some silverware come back to north London. Obviously one of the big two, the Premier League or the Champions League, would be the dream, but that’s a huge ask.

Tottenham got to the Champions League final last season but they’re currently 28/1 to win it this season. They’re 66/1 to win the Premier League.

By contrast, they’re as short as 15/2 to win the FA Cup and would be similarly priced to win the Carabao Cup if they hadn’t gone out to Colchester last night.

Former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood criticised Pochettino for rotating last night.

“I’m all for going for this competition when you haven’t won anything for such a long period of time, and I just think it’s an opportunity missed to get to the next stage,” he said on Sky Sports.

“They should’ve just got the job done and brought the big players off after.”

He’s got a point but the team Tottenham put out – with Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Kyle Walker-Peters, Lucas Moura and Delle Alli starting – should have been good enough to win the game. Man City rotated heavily and won 3-0.

With Spurs playing the Champions League something has to give, and rotating in the Carabao Cup is a sensible option. The real issue is the Spurs squad not performing – they’ve lost 12, drawn six and won just eight of the last 26 games. The loss to Colchester is just part of this bigger problem.
