Chelsea fans have taken to Twitter to slaughter Willian for his performance in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The Brazilian put in a poor shift against Jurgen Klopp’s men, and was unable to effectively influence the match as Frank Lampard’s men succumbed to first-half goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino, despite a late screamer from N’Golo Kante.

But after another disappointing outing from Willian, many fans were left baffled as to why Lampard gave him a starting place in the side.

It was a wholly anonymous display from the wide man, and in a game where Chelsea needed big performers, he ultimately offered very little.

Here are some of the best tweets from supporters.

There is no shame in getting beat off this Liverpool side, and when the Reds are at full throttle, they are arguably the best side in world football right now.

But there’s a difference between being outplayed and simply going through the motions in the expectation that a loss is coming. For large parts of this match, it felt as if the 31-year-old was doing the latter.

Prior to Sunday, Willian had only started one Premier League game this season, with a further three substitute appearances, and nothing in those outings had suggested that he deserved the start against Liverpool.

Averages of 0.8 shots and no key passes per match leave an awful lot to be desired, as per Whoscored, and even if he is completing 1.8 successful dribbles per match, it’s all a bit futile if he isn’t producing any end product. Willian hasn’t contributed a single goal or assist yet for Chelsea this season in any competition.

He wasn’t the worst Chelsea player on Sunday – both Mason Mount and Emerson got ratings in the 5s from WhoScored, while Willian got a 6.4, but he began to cut an increasingly frustrated figure as the game went on.

One fan said he “adds nothing, nothing at all to this team” and while that’s a harsh assessment, Frank Lampard needs attacking returns from all of his attacking players. Willian is failing him in this regard at the moment.
