Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has given permission for Kalvin Phillips to be handed a new contract with the club, including a substantial pay rise, according to Football Insider.

The 23-year-old is understood to have re-opened talks with his boyhood side as they look to tie him down to a long term deal.

And the report claims that there is growing confidence that an agreement can be struck to extend his stay at Elland Road, with a sizeable increase on his current £10,000-a-week wage.

How big would this be for Leeds?

In a word, massive.

Phillips is a huge talent with plenty of potential, and there is no reason to believe that he cannot go all the way to the top of the English game.

Already a lynchpin for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, he has been a standout performer for some time now.

Over the course of the opening six Championship matches of this season, he has averaged 4.7 tackles per game, as well as 1.3 interceptions and 1.8 clearances, as per Whoscored.

Defensively, he is an immense presence, but he can also be a threat in terms of setting Leeds up on the attack too.

Phillips has a pass completion rate of 86.4% from an average of 67.2 passes, including one key pass and 7.3 successful long balls.

That range of passing can be a crucial weapon for United, allowing them to switch the point of attack or spring a high defensive line with one incisive pass.

Is he likely to sign?

It feels increasingly likely that Phillips will remain a Leeds player in the long term.

The biggest challenge was probably keeping him this summer in the face of serious interest from the Premier League, including newly-promoted side Aston Villa, as reported by The Sun.

Had he left in the summer, United probably would have struggled to get promoted this season, but with him in the side, they look serious contenders for an automatic spot.

If they do go up, that would be an ideal scenario for both the club and the player, who would surely be realising a dream by representing his home-town side in the top flight.

There are a lot of obstacles to overcome before that dream is realised, but Leeds will feel an awful lot more confident about clearing those hurdles with Phillips in the team.
