Aston Villa sidestepped a potential banana skin in style on Tuesday night, thrashing sorry Crewe 6-1 in the EFL cup.

They scored the first after just four minutes through Ezri Konsa before Conor Hourihane added another two before half-time.

The fourth came almost straight after Jack Grealish was introduced into the fray – a surprising move given that the game was already done and dusted.

However, he showed his class by bursting forward down the left and drilling a low cross into the box that was finished smartly by Keinan Davis.

Frederic Guilbert added the fifth in the 76th minute before Ryan Wintle got the consolation for Crewe. The last word went to Grealish, though, who scored the sixth in the 87th minute in a result that will give Villa a confidence boost ahead of a winnable Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Grealish will likely start that game but meanwhile fans were enjoying his instant impact in the EFL Cup tonight.

Here are the best reactions from Villa fans to Grealish tonight:

One fan asked whether it was necessary to bring Grealish on with the game won at 3-0 but ‘predicted’ he would have an instant impact and “create a goal”. Given the timing of the tweet, we think Grealish provided the assist halfway through the fan typing it.

Is there anything that Grealish can’t do? That’s what one fan asked and it’s a question that Grealish will look to answer through his career. To date, he hasn’t won a senior cap for England but now he’s playing in the Premier League he’s got a bigger shot of catching Gareth Southgate’s eye.

One fan pointed out the hunger that the Villa players showed at 5-1 up. That’s an attitude that will really please Dean Smith and it certainly had the fans purring tonight, with this supporter saying it was “simply sensational”.
