Lee Wallace has said that none of the “top brass” at Rangers wished him well after his exit from Ibrox.

Wallace completed a free transfer to QPR at the start of the month, a move that sees him reunited with former manager Mark Warburton.

Wallace had been at Rangers for eight years since his move from Hearts and made 262 appearances for the club.

However, Wallace was fined and suspended for alleged misconduct in the dressing room after Rangers lost 4-0 to Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final in April 2018.

The 31-year-old was effectively frozen out of the Rangers side since winning his appeal and only made three cameo appearances under Steven Gerrard last season.

Talking on the Jim White Show (talkSPORT, Tuesday, 11am) Wallace had only positive things to say about Rangers and Gerrard but admitted his relationship with the club’s hierarchy never recovered.

Wallace was asked by White if he felt victimised after the disciplinary action and subsequent appeal.

“It’s a very difficult situation,” Wallace said. “I’ve chosen to remain quiet on it, It was about working hard and making an impact at Rangers at the time.

“I still wanted the team to do well, for the management team to do well, and I worked hard every day in training.

“When I look back I’m absolutely gutted, but the only regret I have is that I wasn’t able to win any silverware with Rangers.”

White asked him if any of the club’s “top brass” wished him well when he left.

“No, that wasn’t the case. I’m not too disappointed in that, but certain parts of the club, they are what they are, but that’s a small fraction of the club.

“Steven Gerrard was fantastic, what a learning process working under him… Steven Gerrard and Michael Beale made a big impression on me. It was a situation that wasn’t ideal for them and I feel I was given a fair crack under them.”

OPINION

This was a classy interview from a player who gave a lot to Rangers, staying with them when they were demoted as lots of other players left. For that reason, he’s always been popular with the fans and plenty of them sent messages of support to their former captain on Twitter after he was on talkSPORT. He had nothing hut good words for manager Steven Gerrard, despite being effectively frozen out of the side, but it can’t have been easy. Gerrard was struggling in the left-back position last season and used Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan out of position when Borna Barisic was injured. Flanagan put in some shocking performances and it’s hard not to think that Wallace would have been a better option. However, politics behind the scenes obviously played a part in his treatment. The only negative thing Wallace had to say was about not getting wished well from the leading figures at the club and that doesn’t reflect well on Rangers. It’s not hard to act in a professional manner and move forward.
