Chris Sutton has hit back with a brutal put-down of former Rangers player Lee Hodson after remarks he made about the Scottish Premiership.

Hodson, who moved to Gillingham over the summer, said in an interview with Kent Online, “Rangers is a massive club and I was playing in front of 50,000 fans at home games but the standard in League 1 is just as good as the Scottish Premier League.”

Sutton responded to the interview on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday saying, “A guy who couldn’t get a regular game for St Mirren talking about standards”.

VERDICT

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. We’re not sure why anyone would do down their former club after finding a new club, but Hodson felt the wrath of Chris Sitton after his ill-judged remarks. Hodson moved to Rangers from the MK Dons in 2016 but only made 27 appearances before being loaned to St Mirren last season. They finished second from bottom of the Scottish Premiership and Hodson was dropped from the team at the end of the season. He only made one cameo appearance in the last 16 league games before completing a move to League One club Gillingham in the summer on a free transfer. There’s an ongoing debate about how teams like Celtic and Rangers would do if they played in the Premier League, and the truth is they probably wouldn’t do that well. However, to compare them to League One teams is a disservice. Rangers almost qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League and Celtic did. Players like Kieran Tierney would grace the Premier League, with Arsenal currently trying to sign the  Celtic defender. Jermain Defoe is on loan from Premier League side Bournemouth. Yes, there are big sides in League One, like Sunderland and Portsmouth, but they’re down on their luck at the moment. Hodson would be best served getting his head down and trying to ensure he gets regular game-time in League One before stirring things up.
