Rangers have made Leeds United forward Kemar Roofe a top target to replace Alfredo Morelos if the Colombia international leaves Ibrox this summer, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that Morelos is edging closer to leaving Glasgow and Steven Gerrard has eyed up 26-year-old Roofe as a potential replacement.

It is understood that Championship giants Leeds want £5million for the ex-West Brom forward.

The Scottish Sun adds that Rangers would have to at least match Roofe’s £10,000-a-week earnings at Elland Road to be able to lure him to Ibrox before the start of next season.

Good move for Rangers?

Finding a replacement for Morelos could be one of the toughest tasks that Gerrard has had at Ibrox if the Colombian does move on this summer.

The 23-year-old scored 30 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions for Rangers last season, but his disciplinary record let him down as he was sent off on five occasions and cashing on him now could be in the best interest of the club.

Could Roofe be a suitable replacement? The Leeds forward scored 15 goals in 34 total appearances last season as Marcelo Bielsa’s side finished third in the Championship table.

Roofe is older and not quite as prolific as Morelos, but the Championship is a tougher league than the Scottish Premiership.

Roofe could flourish in Scotland’s top-flight and might be a solid replacement for Morelos, but would he want to go north of the border with Leeds favourites to lift the Championship next season?

Likely to happen?

According to the Scottish Sun, Morelos is getting closer to leaving Rangers, so Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen will need to find a replacement otherwise they will leave themselves short of quality up front.

Jermain Defoe did well at the end of last season but as he is only on loan from Bournemouth, the Gers will surely want someone who they can say is their own player.

Roofe is in the final year of his contract at Leeds and the Yorkshire club could take this interest from Rangers as an opportunity to cut their losses on the forward.

Do not write this one off yet.
