Stuart Pearce thinks that David Moyes would be a good fit at Newcastle, with the club on the hunt for a new manager.

Talking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show (talkSPORT, Monday, 8am), Pearce said that Steven Gerrard should stay at Rangers for another season.

He then added that he was surprised that Moyes wasn’t being linked with the job.

Asked whether Gerrard would have to take the job if it was offered to him Pearce replied, “I wouldn’t say that’s a foregone conclusion.

“Whether now is the time I’m not so sure. I’d stay another 12 months at Rangers – if he can get his hands on a trophy that will be a very successful season.”

Asked who he thinks should be the new Newcastle manager, Pearce said, “You mentioned him earlier. I’ve worked with him and I know how good he is.

“I’m surprised David Moyes isn’t in contention. I can see that working, I can see the fit there, personally as well.”

OPINION

Moyes wouldn’t be the first choice of the fans and his career has never really recovered since his disastrous appointment at Man United. Ironically, his six-year contract at United would have expired at the end of last month had he not been sacked just nine months into his reign. Since then he’s had stints at Real Sociedad (sacked after a year), Sunderland (resigned after less than a year after his first relegation) and West Ham (six-month contract where he steered the Hammers to safety). However, there are some things that are in his favour. He’s currently without a club so Mike Ashley wouldn’t have to pay a compensation fee. He’s also hugely experienced in the Premier League – in January 2012 he became only the fourth manager after Alex Ferguson, Arsène Wenger and Harry Redknapp to record 150 wins in the Premier League. He did the job that he was brought in to do at West Ham. When he took charge of them the club was in the relegation zone and they finished 13th. However, despite that, Hammers fans didn’t rate him and, while thanking him for keeping them up, they wanted him out. It comes down to ambition. If Ashley is happy just keeping Newcastle in the Premier League, Moyes could work. Fans will want someone more progressive.
