Leeds United have opened talks with Kalvin Phillips over a new contract, according to local journalist Phil Hay.

Hay, formerly with the Yorkshire Evening Post, said that the offer that Leeds has tabled would put him among the club’s biggest earners.

The highest earner at the club currently is goalkeeper Kiko Casilla who is reportedly on £30,000-a-week after his move from Real Madrid in January.

Hay made the claim on his personal Twitter page on Friday afternoon.

VERDICT

This is brilliant news for Leeds fans who were looking over their shoulders amid interest from Aston Villa. Phillips was one of the standout players in the Leeds side last season and it had been reported that he wanted to stay and play for Marcelo Bielsa. It had also been reported that Bielsa wanted to build his side around Phillips next season and this is the clearest sign yet that the club do not want to lose him. The interest from Villa gives Phillips a strong hand to play in the negotiations but it does seem like there’s a desire from all sides to thrash a new contract out. A new deal would give the fans another big boost after a week that’s seen the club sign Helder Costa, Jack Harrison, and Ben White, along with securing a season-long loan deal for Jack Clarke after selling the youngster to Tottenham. Leeds fans were elated with the news – here are some of their reactions on Twitter.
