Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan believes that Steve Bruce could be a “very good appointment” at Newcastle.

The 58-year-old former Sunderland and Aston Villa manager is reportedly in the frame for the job following the departure of Rafa Benitez at the end of June.

Jordan tweeted, “If the Newcastle fans could move past the Sunderland connection, this is the job I know he would have once walked across coals… excuse the analogy to have”.

VERDICT

Steve Bruce made the headlines when he took the Sunderland job as a boyhood Newcastle fan and was sacked after two seasons when he took the club to 13th and 10th in the Premier League. We’re surprised Jordan is recommending him after Bruce left Palace after just a few months into the role, with the club taking an injunction out in an attempt to stop him joining Birmingham. He was sacked as Aston Villa manager in October last year after failing to get them promoted and amid protests from fans, including one who infamously threw a cabbage at him. Bruce is now manager of Sheffield Wednesday who finished 12th in the Championship last season. Jordan claims it’s the Sunderland link that is putting Newcastle fans off but the overriding opinion seems to be that he’s just not good enough. This Newcastle fan summed up his feelings by saying, “It’s so sad that you actually think the reason #nufc fans are angry about Bruce is because of WHO he once managed. It’s not. It’s because of his lack of ability. He would be a disaster & another relegation waiting to happen.” Bruce’s odds of being the next Newcastle manager tumbled dramatically on Tuesday and he’s now the overriding favourite and as short as 1/2 to land the job with one leading bookmaker. That doesn’t mean an awful lot in a market known for being extremely volatile but there are many Newcastle fans who are hoping this short bet doesn’t come good.
