BBC Scotland journalist Tom English has said the situation regarding Alfredo Morelos at Rangers is “getting weirder”.

He tweeted his verdict on Monday after Steven Gerrard called on Morelos to declare himself as a Rangers player next season.

The Sun – who claim that AC Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt, Crystal Palace and Newcastle were all interested this summer – quoted Gerrard as saying: “I can only say I want him [Morelos] to be part of it.

“So can we have Alfredo up here please to stop me having to answer the question every time.”

English added, “Gerrard calling on him to declare whether he’s staying or going while confirming that there hasn’t been a single offer for him. ‘Staying’ would be the obvious reply. He has nowhere else to go right now.”

Plenty of Rangers fans think that English is just stirring the pot judging by their replies to the tweet.

However, it does seem out of character for Gerrard to put the onus onto a player to declare himself as a Rangers player for next season.

We’re obviously not privy to what’s going on behind the scenes but we’d be a little worried if we were a Rangers fan.

TiF tactics – what would Rangers be losing?

Alfredo Morelos is the best striker in the Premiership. You can look at the goals he scored – 18 compared to 17 from Sam Cosgrove (Aberdeen) and 15 from Odsonne Edouard (Celtic), his nearest rivals – but his overall stats also put him top of the pile.

Looking at all the Premiership games last season, Morelos comes 0ut on top of seven key stats, including Total Actions (Successful). He delivered more goals and assists, and more shots on target per 90 minutes.

He would be a huge loss to Rangers and a player they would struggle to replace this late on in the window.
