Ian Wright has sent a transfer message to Tottenham head honchos Daniel Levy and Joe Lewis saying they’re “going to have to spend some money” this summer.

Former Arsenal star Wright heaped praise on the way Tottenham have built a team without spending huge sums of money.

However, he said they’ve had a taste of success now and he believes the only way to get to the next level is to spend.

Talking on the Hawksbee & Jacobs show on talkSPORT on Tuesday Wright said, “Not so long ago people were going on about Sissoko, he’s turned into a mainstay. You look at people like Trippier, what he came for, Dele Alli, Harry Kane came for nothing, Christian Eriksen he came for £11.5million, how much would he go for?

“You’re looking at the way they’ve built that team, not spending much money and they’ve gone into the new stadium, got to the Champions League final, been in the top-four for the past few years, that’s progress however you look at it.

“When people thinking about Daniel Levy and whatever’s going on with Mr Lewis ahead of him, something’s going right.

“But now, now they’re going to have to spend some money because they’ve got a taste for it now.”

OPINION

Tottenham are in a strong position thanks to some judicial dealings from Daniel Levy, and it will only get better if they do good business this summer. By contrast, Arsenal have got it all wrong over the past few years and are faced with the reality of dropping out of the top six if Unai Emery can’t affect changes. They don’t have much money to spend and the question that’s going to be answered soon is how much Levy is going to give to Pochettino to rebuild at Spurs. There are plenty of players that Pochettino could move on to raise extra funds too, even if Eriksen stays, such as Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier. New full-backs would seem like the perfect place to start a rebuild given the success of Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool. This really feels like a tipping point for Tottenham, though – spend now, or regret at your leisure.
