Noel Whelan has heaped praise on potential Leeds United signing Helder Costa.

The Wolves winger has been heavily linked with a move to Elland Road this summer, as reported by Football Insider.

And BBC Leeds pundit Whelan is eager for his former side to land the wide man.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “He is a fantastic player, loads of pace, can make things happen – the sort of player that can change games and win games for you.

“We need more players like that and if that is to materialise then what a fantastic first signing – second signing after Bielsa – that is, if Leeds United can get hold of that kind of player.

“He’s got everything that you kind of need in a player to open up doors – we’ve only really got Pablo Hernandez who can actually do that consistently or who has that different level of quality. Helder Costa would just add another dimension.

“He’s coming from a club that’s been successful and still is in its first year so we’re getting Premier League quality.”

OPINION
You can see why Whelan is excited by the prospect of this one coming off. Costa is a quality player, and certainly one who can cause chaos in the Championship. Leeds’ main problem this season, as they went so close to promotion, was a lack of killer instinct in the final third. They created enough chances to go up several times over, but ultimately didn’t have enough to see things over the line. Bringing someone like Costa into the side would help with that problem no end. He is pacy and direct, and more than capable of causing havoc in attacking areas. If United can land the deal, and if Marcelo Bielsa can get him purring, this could be a brilliant deal for Leeds. Using the loan market is a smart idea this summer, with funds likely to be at a premium, and if Costa can be brought in early doors it could lay out a blueprint for the rest of the transfer window.
