West Ham will have to pay a club-record £44million if they want to sign Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez, according to the Daily Star.

The Hammers have reportedly been linked with a move for the 12-time Uruguay international in recent days, with one report [Gianluca Di Marzio] suggesting Manuel Pellegrini’s side could make a double swoop for Gomez and Celta teammate Stanislav Lobotka.

The Daily Star now claims, however, that the La Liga side want West Ham to pay Gomez’s £44million release clause, and are unwilling to listen to any other offers for the player, who scored 13 goals and assisted five others in all competitions last season.

Good move for West Ham?

Definitely. At 22 years of age, there is plenty of room for development for the player and there is every chance that if he did move to West Ham, he would do just that. Gomez is an exciting forward who certainly has an eye for goal and he can also set up goals for teammates, which is another great attribute to have. For £44million, it is a massive investment for Pellegrini’s side, but if the latest reports are to be believed, it looks like Gomez is a player the East London club are really keen on and believe could make a real difference.

Likely to happen?

There is a real chance. It doesn’t look as if West Ham are going to rest on their laurels this summer and could well be prepared to break their transfer record again. It would be a wise move, and one which could definitely happen for the Hammers in the coming weeks.
